We, the students in grade 8 of the Goethe School of the applied Biology course, our
teachers Mrs Peters and Mr. Hartung and our Department Head Mrs. Peter are currently
constructing a smelting furnace, alongside the guidance of Professor Oppermann. This
furnance is approximately 1.5 metres tall.
The furnace is used for the extraction of iron and heats up to 900°C. We want to
use the furnace for the production of iron, just as it was originally produced in
For the construction of the furnace we needed clay, water and willow brances. For
the production of iron we needed charcoal and iron ore. The smelting oven is a component
of the metallurgic process in Ilsenburg.
The construction was very fun for us and showed how difficult the production of iron
in the past was.
We, the students of the Biology course, would like to thank Mrs. Peters, Mr. Hartung,
and especially Professor Oppermann for their help with this project.
